The Association Of Illustrators (AOI) asked me to create the cover for their Editorial Directory. Apart from having to use yellow, I had complete freedom in the artwork.
Inspired by Manuscript Books and Initials, I decided to use the opportunity to create a tribute to the history of Editorial. Ornamented Initials mark an extended period of the History of the Book from the 8th to the 15th Century. They are considered an independent element even-though they are directly related both to the illustration and the body copy.
Their origin is quite fascinating, as a Celto-Germanic creation with roots in the classical world of Rome. The Celts established a willful direction of ever-expanding, ever-increasing force and energy. Then later, the Germans carried the work further, achieving a kind of balance between the Roman order and the Celto-Germanic dynamism.
