My illustration Stories has been shortlisted for the The Prize for Illustration 2017: Sounds of the City, an exhibition of 100 illustrations, opening at the London Transport Museum on Friday 19 May. Visitors will be able to enjoy a visual journey inspired by lyrics and language; hubbub and stillness; heritage and science; through to the wildlife and nightlife of our diverse and multi-layered cities.

The one hundred works were chosen from over two thousand entries by an expert panel of judges from the art and design world for the prestigious The Prize for Illustration, which is organised by London Transport Museum in partnership with the Association of Illustrators (AOI). Each of the illustrations is accompanied by a short, revealing insight into the artist’s inspiration for their work.

About my entry

During my first encounter with London in 2004 I barely spoke English. Words and sounds would merge into abstract shapes so I picked up on sounds more than ever before. In combination with my little English I developed a way of expressing myself through ‘noises’ instead of actual words. This used to come up both in my speech as well as in my illustrations.

Since that time, combining images with sounds has become a central part of my practice. I am interested in the abstract quality and rhythm of sounds but also in the power of words and stories, in the emotions and narratives locked behind each sound.

Cities are full of stories, some of them told in first person by people using their own voices and others hidden in more abstract sounds and noises. They are lurking in each and every corner, merging to compose one big colorful story, full of activity, diversity and life.
