With zen gardens, waterfalls and clouds off limits, the Headspace project needed a unique way to communicate some fairly abstract concepts. The result was this series of 11 instructional illustrations that helps to demystify the process of learning to meditate. They appear online, in the iPhone app and also in a printed booklet given out at the Headspace events.
Meditation follows a fairly strict sequence of events. Like anything, this sequence can be learnt, but the last thing anyone wants to take away from learning meditation is being stressed about not remembering what they’re supposed to do next or whether or not they should open their eyes half-way through. This was essentially the brief – to take the stress out of learning to meditate.
Thankfully I was thrown into this fairly daunting brief by having to experience it myself, on an intensive 10 week course led by Andy Puddicombe of Headspace. These instructional illustrations are a direct result of the experience, each acting as a memory trigger to the internal sequence of events that takes place whenever you sit to meditate.
